Analyzing the Qualitative Characteristics of a Study

1. Access any of the following research journals to locate three specific qualitative method articles:
Applied Nursing Research
Nursing Research
Research in Nursing and Health
Western Journal of Nursing Research
2. Select one article from each of the three categories below (these do not have to relate to your own topic of interest, but if you find articles that inform your knowledge about your topic, all the better):
a phenomenological study
an ethographic study
a grounded theory study
3. Define each of the study categories (phenomenological, ethographic and grounded theory) finding a reference outside of your textbook.
4. Address whether each article follows the definition of specific study (phenomenological, ethographic and grounded theory) as explained in the textbook.
5. Describe how the researchers participated in each study.
6. Explain how the data was gathered in each study, including how this meets or does not meet the characteristics of the specific study.
7. Reflect on whether the researcher allowed personal bias to play a part in the gathering or interpreting of the data.

8. Do not exceed three pages. You may want to group your answers into one paragraph for each of the categories (phenomenological, ethographic and grounded theory), an intro and a conclusion. Be sure you are referencing your categories so it is crystal clear which study and category you are discussing.
