The main
focus for the written assignment is to show an ability to analyse
issues related to the teaching and learning of Probability. Hopefully,
you will teach Probability (or a closely linked topic) in your first
placement and you can include some relevant incidents or examples from
lessons or pupils’ work. If not, you need to discuss the topic with
staff in school and either (or both) observe someone else’s lesson or
analyse pupils’ written work from their exercise books from when they
were taught the topic. Your writing should be individual and there is no
requirement to refer to your presentation work in your assignment,
though you may wish to include any relevant aspects. We will expect you
to show analysis of your mathematics topic (Probability) which could
include writing about some of the following:
interconnections within the topic;
its relation to other topics;
potential misconceptions;
the role of language and notation;
the mathematical ideas underpinning the topic.
We will also expect you to make reference to pupils’ work and consider implications for your future practice. We will expect you to support your analysis with reference to research literature. Although dated, you may still find these books a useful starting point:
Dickson, L., Brown, M. & Gibson, O. (1984) Children Learning Mathematics, London: Cassell.
Hart, K. (Ed) (1981) Children’s Understanding of Mathematics 11-16, London: John Murray.
Nickson, M. (2000) Teaching and Learning Mathematics: A Teacher’s Guide to Recent Research and its Application, London: Cassell.
