The Role of the Culture of Power in the Formation of My Cultural Identity

I've selected a 5 year old kindergarden. He was born her in California. Both parents and grandparents who boys lives don't speak fluent english. Boy finds it difficult to understand both language since at school its only english speaking and at home its Chinese. Boy is active and plays with both genders. However at times he finds it easier to play with a girl during playtime. He claims that some boys play rough with him, so he prefers soft and gentle games and that is the reason why he plays with girls. Usually one particular hispanic girl. My observation was at Head Start- Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center in the City of Pasadena, Ca.


Begin your ten hour observation of a child who is from a different culture than your own in a school setting. The child you observe can range in age from zero to twelve. Your observation should take place, if at all possible, in a school or play setting.

A good observation should take place for two to three hours a day. In this way, you will get a fuller sense of the child. Work out the timing for your 10 hours of observation in a way that works best for you and the child.

You are to keep a journal where you will write what you are seeing and observing(you may also type in a notebook or I Pad. . In your journal you should also write the teacher's daily schedule. If you have difficulty gaining access to a child, whom you can observe, please let me know as soon as possible.

There are no special guidelines, checklists, etc. for writing your observations. You should just observe(be objective)  the child and write in a journal exactly what you see. If questions, thoughts, or ideas arise for you during the course of your observation, record these in your journal as well.
