Background:

Carol Greely had been a registered nurse for 25 years and a nurse manager for more than 10 years when she was asked to take over as nurse manager of a particular medical/surgical unit known throughout the hospital, none too affectionately, as the "hot seat." Although she had heard a few things about this floor, because of the size of the hospital and her recent assignment in a relatively removed area, Carol had little information about why the hot seat was so designated. After three months on the job, however, Carol had formed some strong opinions regarding the bases of many of the unit's problems. To her, the majority of staff on the unit exhibited a complete lack of professionalism. Carol became convinced of this for a number of reasons, including the following:

There were many appearance problems and many violations of the department's none-too-often-enforced dress code. If there were a worst-dressed list maintained, Carol concluded, surely her nurses would be on it.

· The unit's rate of absenteeism was the worst of any unit within the nursing department.

· Two (thankfully unsuccessful) attempts by unions to organize the hospital's nurses had apparently originated with the nurses in Carol's unit.

· Carol had never before seen a unit with such a high level of schedule juggling-shift trades, requests for specific days off, and especially changes to the schedule at the last minute.

It was not long before Carol found herself becoming highly cynical about the unit and its future. It seemed to her that nursing meant no more to many of these people than the paycheck and that they constantly put their social lives and personal preferences before the needs of the patients.

When she had been on the job six months, Carol received a startling piece of secondhand information from a friend in the nursing department who swore her to secrecy as to the source. It was apparently a closely guarded secret in nursing administration that her particular unit was deliberately maintained as a concentration of marginal employees. It was, in the words of Carol's friend, "to keep the butterflies and malcontents all in one place as much as possible, so they wouldn't disrupt other units." Carol was further led to believe that she could expect to be reassigned after about 18 months on the job, when it would then be someone else's turn to sit in the hot seat.

Carol's initial reaction to what she had learned was anger; however, the more she thought about the position in which she found herself, the more she became determined to do something with the time left to her in the unit. She decided she was going to do everything in her power to turn the hot seat into a real nursing unit.

Instructions: Develop a detailed plan of action for Carol Greely to follow in attempting to accomplish her difficult objective or to go as far toward accomplishing it as possible. Highlight the steps in her plan for which the human resource department can provide positive advice or assistance, and describe the nature of the human resource involvement.

Designing genetically encodable Ca2+ sensors

Designing genetically encodable Ca2+ sensors have played profound roles for scientists to decode cell activity changes in living animals. There are many different methods to achieve such goals, and one of the most powerful methods is to use single chain fluorescence proteins (e.g. GFP) fused with calmodulin (CaM) and one of its specific binding peptide. Such approach has been enabling scientists to be able to image Ca2+ signals with broad dynamic ranges and with specific kinetic rates. Please research recent developments in this Ca2+ signal imaging research field, and explain the design principles and applications of the methods, and provide your views of future developments.

Have you ever walked into a restaurant during lunch in downtown and found it almost empty? Or visited a miniature golf course in the summer resort community during some time of the season and you were the only one there?

1. Why does the restaurant even bother to stay open, because it might seem that the revenue from the few customers could not possibly cover the cost of running the restaurant? Why do you think the restaurant still open even though it's not covering all its costs?

2. In making the decision whether to open for lunch, what kind of costs must the restaurant consider in the decision making and why?

Critical evaluation of practice

1 Undertake a study of the factual knowledge in case studies
2 Determine what different actors know about these case studies
3 Present 4 characteristic problems that occur in this area
4 Evaluate the operation of knowledge in this area

The objective is to look at the limits of knowledge and how this is handled and could be handled better. In particular, how the different way people know about the area affects the outcome in practice. Expertise involves both having knowledge and experience. However the ability to use expertise depends on the circumstances of the situation. Both Technology and the Law have a clear knowledge base and methods of determining truth. However, in problem situations this truth, and method of determining it, is pressurised.

The first task will involve a literature study. You should be aware of the different value of sources. You may need to understand the context of the situation you are studying for example lintels will require knowledge of structures and brickwork. This needs to be determined and related appropriately.

Having developed a detailed factual knowledge, you should approach between 2 and 3 people from different backgrounds and different roles who might be involved with this area and determine their knowledge. The inquiry into this needs to be planned and a semi formal interview conducted. During these interviews the 3rd objective can also be determined; namely the problems that they have had in this area. All the problems do not need to be included in the assignment; however the assignment should present the nature of the important problems. You should ask how the problems were resolved.

To get this or a similar paper done by an expert writer at EssaySharkWriters.Com, Click here

Finally, you need to analyse the nature of the knowledge in the areas, presenting how outcomes are affected by the differences in thinking, responsibility and intent and making suggestions about how this could be managed better.

Attached is a copy of a PowerPoint that has the results from the interviews and that technology which is lightweight steel frames.

Also attached is a copy of a previous similar essay which will be useful to understand the layout and content.

Other points to take into account are that it needs to include:
Introduction introduces approach and problems Conclusion summarises work clearly and succinctly The facts were well presented showing a technical appreciation of the subject.

There was some attempt at establishing key issues but these were minimal were not connected to practice.

Two different actors were interviewed. Good engagement with their perspectives. The actors were well chosen to be able to learn from different perspectives. Key issues were presented from the view points

There was some discussion of how the actors worked together beyond standard industry processes. This allowed an explanation of industry norms and their operation.
The discussion of better operation only referred to current solutions.

How is it that you have come to eat these foods and see them as normal? Then, identify some foods that other people eat in other countries that you do not and might even view as "weird." How come they eat these foods? How is your evaluation of what they eat an example of ethnocentrism?   What about your cultural practices makes those food seem weird? Athens and Sparta at the end of the 6th century BC.

Essay #1—Discuss the origins, development, and the similarities and differences between the political institutions of Athens and Sparta at the end of the 6th century BC.  Consider first the origins of the common features of Greek poleis as they emerged from the Dark Age.  How did the Athenians and Spartans adapt these institutions to suit their respective needs?  What circumstances (social, economic, and political) caused the two cities to develop differently?  Finally, consider why the Athenians consider the nature of the differences.  Why did the Athenians believe their constitution to be “democratic” and the Spartan “oligarchic”?  Is Athens really more democratic than Sparta? Why, or why not?

Essay #2—Discuss the role of prophecy in Greek mythological tales.  How and why do the gods communicate with mortals in these stories?  Does prophecy in Greek mythology simply inform mortals of an unalterable future, or do the gods use prophecy to guide human behavior?  Use examples of prophecy from the works of Homer and Sophocles to support your position.

After reading the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde), type your answers to the following 3 questions. The minimum length for each answer is 250-300 words (about a page) – there is no maximum length. Assignment will include clarity of presentation and argument, and appropriate and accurate references to the text of the novel.

Question: 1
Choose one of the following main characters in the book (Dorian Gray, Lord Henry Wotton, and Basil Hallward) and describe their worldview (conviction set) as you see it manifest in their actions and interactions. What convictions drive them, form their moral logic, etc.?
Question: 2
From the narrative itself, how would you describe Oscar Wilde’s perception of the moral world? As you read it, what does the author think about human nature, the way moral codes function in culture, whether society is essentially moral/immoral, whether morality (such as) exists at all, etc.? I assume no expertise in late 19th century British literature and culture ---- I want to hear what you see when you read this particular story. You may follow any trajectory (or trajectories) you wish, but provide examples from the novel to explain your conclusions.
Question: 3
Reflecting on the main image in the book (and thus the title of the book) ---- Basil’s mysterious portrait of Dorian ---- What do you think of the relationship between human character as a matter of internal identity, and human character as a manifest in appearance, action, etc.? In other words, what is the relationship between “what a person is inside” and how that person manifests themselves in public, in their employment, in their habits, etc.? Is there a necessary connection between a person’s deep psychology (their “true self”, etc.) and how that person is understood by those around them? Fundamentally, what is the relationship between “being a good person” and “acting and behaving well”, or “being good” and “doing good”? You may take this question in any direction you wish, but make sure you reference the novel itself as you explain your conclusion.

II.  Topics
Pick a topic from this list AND ONLY FROM THIS LIST.  Submitting a paper you wrote for another class is NOT allowed.  The required reading listed for each is a minimum.  You must do additional reading.  The ONLY permissible topic area is:  The Social Security/Medicare Crisis

Write an informative paper about some aspect of the topic.  It can be an overview, a case study, an issue, or a series of topics.  It must be an economics paper.  If it looks like a paper you did for another class (like sociology or history) or has a weird spin to it, like a sports paper, I will not accept it.  No comparative studies or international papers.  The paper must be on the United States.  Submitting a paper you wrote for another class is NOT allowed.  Tables of data and excellent overviews are available from the Trustees of the Social Security Trust Fund Annual Report.  2015 edition link:

IV.  Turnitin .com
You must submit the text of your paper to Turnitin.com.  Submit everything: the text, the title page, tables, notes, and bibliography. You may only submit once.  The system will not allow you to resubmit.  If you try to resubmit, the first draft will be in the database, and you will get a very high plagiarism score.
If you have substantial overlap with other material, you will get a grade reduction and/or fail the course and/or be written up for academic dishonesty.

You will access Turnitin.com through Blackboard, by means of an icon in the “Paper” folder.  Do NOT go directly to the Turnitin.com site.

V.  No Late Papers
The due date is stated in the syllabus.  Don’t be late.  Do not ask for an extension unless you were kidnapped by Barbary pirates and held for ransom for more than 3 weeks off the Horn of Africa in a cave with no Internet access.  A notarized declaration from at least three captor pirates is required.  I also want a photo of the cave, inside and out, and a copy of the bank statement showing the ransom payment withdrawal.  I will check your passport.

VI.  Grading
Poor grammar alone will prevent a paper from earning more than 100 points.  Failure to complete each part will result in substantial deductions.   For example, no notes will result in 100 points off.  No abstract will result in 50 points off.  Follow directions.

Up to 40 points of extra credit may be earned for extra work, e.g., 5 tables, 10 pages of text, and over 70 notes.  You cannot get extra credit if the paper is missing a part, has weak writing/grammar, or has format problems.  Doing the minimum does not qualify for an A.  Doing a lot of extra work, with serious format problems, does not qualify for extra credit.  Bad faith in the execution of the paper will result in a lower grade.

How far do corporations intrude into the private lives of their employers?

The topic (racial profiling) must focus on a single aspect, as in “How far do corporations intrude into the private lives of their employers?” or “The social costs of financing the distribution of custom-designed drugs.”

The Final Research Project will present research relating the responsibilities of a critical thinker to contemporary society. In this assignment, you will do the following:

Research one aspect of a contemporary social problem.
Define the problem.
Propose a possible solution for the problem.
Create an argument that supports your thesis position. You should take on the perspective of a critically thinking researcher. The argument must present a thesis statement and evidence to support the thesis statement.
Evaluate the ethical outcomes that result from the position you take on the issue and explain how those outcomes would influence society and culture.
Interpret statistical data from at least two peer-reviewed scholarly sources.
Evaluate evidence using the following standards: validity, reliability, and bias related to the chosen topic and accurately identify strengths and weaknesses.

Research and Define the Problem
You must take on the perspective of your major field of study and explain in your paper what that perspective is and how it informs your view of the topic. The topics listed above are far too broad to write about in 10–12 pages. Instead, you must choose a narrowly defined thesis and approach it from the perspective of your field. (I am a hospitality major)

Example:

If you are an economics major, and you are interested in immigration reform, you should approach a very specific aspect of immigration reform through the lens of economic theory and practice. A specific thesis question would not be, “How does illegal immigration influence the U.S. economy?” One could write thousands of pages on such a topic. Instead, a better question would be, “How do illegal immigrant hotel workers in Chicago impact the economy of Northern Illinois?” You would then want to do the research and determine the positive and negative impacts they have, ultimately trying to conclude how illegal immigration in this area should be approached ethically.

How to Hone Your Thesis:

It is important that you start your research early in this course. Try to find the most important contemporary questions and theories in your field of study and then align the most important questions with a very specific aspect of the general topics above. For example, if you are a psychology major, you might want to start thinking within the realm of healthcare reform or aspects of mental health and criminality in the prison system.

Your Argument
You must present a complete argument, including a major claim with at least five points of evidence, information, or data that will prove the claim.
The thesis statement must be
o A clear, simple declarative sentence as the first or last sentence in the opening paragraph of the essay.
o Of such a nature that it can be substantiated, corroborated, verified, and proved through appeal to primary or secondary academic research source materials.
The introductory paragraph must
o Present the thesis statement, an explanation for the importance of the topic, and its relation to the student’s field of study.
Beliefs, opinions, and personal opinions must not be introduced at any point in the essay.
All beliefs and opinions should be supported with academic evidence. Sweeping generalizations with no supporting academic evidence do not reflect adequate critical thinking skills.
Do not include rhetorical questions in your essays. All the questions that are pertinent to your project need to be answered in your essay and your answers again need to be supported with evidence from peer-reviewed journal articles and academically published books.

Attributes of Good Critical Thinking in Papers

Your paper should include academic sources that explain multiple sides of the issue.
The evidence that you use should come from high-level researchers engaged in your field of study.
Your interpretations of the evidence should be objective and state the conclusions and theses presented in the evidence clearly and fairly.
Your paper should place the various forms of evidence in relation to one another and demonstrate why one form or perspective is stronger than the other positions that one could take on the issue.
Your paper should point out the limitations of current evidence and attempt to indicate areas for future research.

Ethical Outcomes of the Position You Take
After you have defined the problem and created an argument about how one ought to respond to the issue, you need to explain the ethical outcomes of the position you have taken. This should again be in relation to the field of study in which you are working. There might be different ethical outcomes that result from your analysis. For example, going back to the example issue above, from an economic standpoint, illegal immigrants might contribute positively to the economy of Northern Illinois in a specific number of ways. Thus, an economist who believes that positive impact to the economy is the greatest good would say that one should promote the use of illegal immigrants. However, because these workers are often paid less than others and eliminate jobs that could be done by residents of Chicago, there could be other negative ethical outcomes that would outweigh the positive impacts to the economy. It is your goal to draw out the ethical implications of your thesis and explain the underlying rationale that is the foundation for your claim that one action is better than another.
Critical thinkers are those who can outline the positive and negative ethical impacts of their positions. In addition, they are able to provide a rationale for why they believe a specific position is the right position, even when it leads to negative outcomes.
Critical thinkers are also able to be honest and objective about the limitations and gray areas that pertain to their theses.

Business Law Case study

There are two parts in Project 1, each worth 10 points (for a total of 20 points or 20% of your
course grade)

Part 1 requires you to brief a case. You may select any of the cases listed so far during this
course (found in the Instructor's Notes or Cases modules) or any case of your choice. In
preparing the brief, follow the format for case briefing as set forth in the Instructor's Notes for
Week 1.

Part 2 is a factual pattern covering Tort Law.

There are two questions that you must answer. The questions are designed to lead your
thinking in developing your responses. The relevant legal issues are listed at the bottom of the
assignment.

You may use whatever sources needed in order for you to answer the questions. However,
bear in mind that this is an individual effort and not collaborative.

Note that there are often more than one correct answer to the questions. What I am interested
in is the why. How did you get to your answer and why it is the correct answer. The answer to a
question can be both "yes" and "no". It is the "why" that I am interested in and it is the "why"
that you will be graded on.

NOTE: The Legal Issues listed at the end of the fact pattern are for guidance only. You do not
need to define them, except where applicable in your written analysis of the fact pattern.

A few tips:

I look very carefully at the presentation. That is, a paper with no misspellings, typographical or
grammatical errors impresses me from the beginning, shows care on your part and is halfway
to a good grade. Proofread carefully!

Do not cut and paste from Wikipedia. There is a lot of information on the internet and I
encourage research using that means, but be very careful. Oftentimes the information on the
internet might be wrong or misleading. So be aware.

Use the proper APA format and cite your sources properly.

Please review the grading rubrics for assignments found in the Course Resource module in the
Student Toolbox.

Your paper should be approximately 2000 words (7-8 pages).
