The objective is to look at the limits of knowledge and how this is handled and could be handled better. In particular, how the different way people know about the area affects the outcome in practice. Expertise involves both having knowledge and experience. However the ability to use expertise depends on the circumstances of the situation. Both Technology and the Law have a clear knowledge base and methods of determining truth. However, in problem situations this truth, and method of determining it, is pressurised.

The first task will involve a literature study. You should be aware of the different value of sources. You may need to understand the context of the situation you are studying for example lintels will require knowledge of structures and brickwork. This needs to be determined and related appropriately.

Having developed a detailed factual knowledge, you should approach between 2 and 3 people from different backgrounds and different roles who might be involved with this area and determine their knowledge. The inquiry into this needs to be planned and a semi formal interview conducted. During these interviews the 3rd objective can also be determined; namely the problems that they have had in this area. Finally, you need to analyse the nature of the knowledge in the areas, presenting how outcomes are affected by the differences in thinking, responsibility and intent and making suggestions about how this could be managed better.
