Course Objectives
After completing this course, if you have attended class regularly, read the assigned material, and completed the coursework you will be able to:
• Make use of your knowledge of key labour market indicators and their trends, such as participation rates, employment and unemployment rates, unionization rates, composition of the labour force
• Access key data sources used in human resource economics research
• Use the tools of labour economics to analyze human resource issues inside or outside the firm; for example, understanding the incentives/ disincentives created by both government and company polices related to things like training, compensation structures and pensions.
• Understand and evaluate the impact of key policies that affect the labour market and HR practices of firms, such as employment standards, labour legislation, human rights and employment equity, immigration policy, employment insurance
• Differentiate among different perspectives within economics on human resource issues
Term Paper
Structure:
Times new roman, 12 front size. The term paper about 10 pages in length and follow this structure:
Question / Problem Definition:
In this section you should outline the topic for the paper and ask a specific question. Please remember that I do not want a descriptive paper but rather one that answers a question.
Economic Theories (Optional):
In this section of the paper you should briefly outline any theories that you are going to use in the paper. This would be the place to clearly state any assumptions. Please remember that any assumptions will have to make sense through the entire paper.
Analysis:
In this section of the paper you should analyze the information that you have collected. State both sides of the argument and make sure that you are treating the subject objectively.
Conclusion and Recommendations:
In this section make sure you answer the question from the first section, that the analysis in the third section supports your answer and that your answer is definitive. Make sure that you make at least two practical recommendations.
Bibliography:
Clearly list all reference materials.
Topic:
